The Funky Seventies

The 1970s was a decade of cultural shifts, social change, and music that left an indelible mark on history. From disco beats to the rise of punk rock, the 70s was a time of diverse musical genres and the idea that anyone can be themselves. New looks were seen on the TV, and new fashions and wilder countercultures were being explored. The 70s was seen as the ascend of the future for music. It was a decade marked by significant shifts in politics, fashion, and entertainment. The 70s saw a lot of political issues and outbursts, mostly riots about unemployment, the Watergate scandal, drug abuse, and the war on drugs and women's liberation. These social issues carried to influencing music with a lot of protest songs from bands who have a platform to speak out (Quite like the 60s) music in the 1970s amplified the social changes and movements of the time. New genres were explored in the 70s, it saw new technologies and styles bands experimented with. The rise of disco and funk happened. You can see this style happening in movies such as Saturday Night Fever, this made the scene go mainstream. Disco, with its groovy and shimmering melodies, dominated the dance floors and popular culture. However, another genre that artists explored with new technologies was new wave, new wave come out and it was a mix of disco and rock/punk music. Artists in this genre were The Talking Heads, Joy Division, and Blondie. The punk movement of the 1970s was a rebellious and influential cultural phenomenon that emerged primarily in the United States and the United Kingdom. Punk was not just a style of music; it was a defiant attitude and a rejection of societal norms. It rebelled against every political happening at the time. Bands like the Sex Pistols and The Clash used their music as a platform to criticize authority and the hypocrisies of the establishment. The 70s left a lasting legacy of influential artists and iconic songs that continue to inspire and entertain generations.
